. . . would get so excited about finding an old envelope full of plant labels and old garden centre receipts.
The more plants I buy the less I remember their names, so I have started a book for all my plant labels. It’s one of those books that you can slip things in – I hold the labels in place with Blue Tac. It is great for a quick search when you can’t remember the name of something.
I am also hoping to gradually add all my plants to the catalogue tab of this website.
Mind you I have just made a list (you know the good old fashioned paper list) and I have over a hundred plants I want to add so it might take me a few years…
I do try to get more organised….
For example last year I made a list of all the things I wanted to do in the garden when the time was right. I have to say I haven’t found it very helpful. Mostly this is because I can’t read my own writing but sometimes even when I can it doesn’t help a lot!
Here are some examples:
- Move maroon _ _ _ _ _ _ _ as too dry
(I clearly couldn’t remember the name!) - Red ground cover from rockery near path
- Tree thing to middle
- Clear some pink stuff
You see what I mean?
Please join in with my ‘Only a Gardener’ meme. I am sure there must be many things that only a gardener would do or get excited about…..
It can be anything from a whole blog to a few words or even just a picture.
I will try to publish on 1st of each month – the same day as April fool’s day, but I think this could run for the first week of the month so it isn’t too close to Helen’s End of Month View.
Just add a tag ‘Only a Gardener’ to your post so it can be found easily and add your link in a comment to this page.
If you don’t have a blog then please do let me know of the crazy things you do by adding a comment to this post. I would love to hear from you.
What an excellent idea 🙂
Thanks – should be fun.
Great idea for a meme Annette – I’ve still to post my EOMV but have a subject in mind 🙂
Thanks Angie. Will look forward to reading your EOMV and hopefully a post on ‘Only a Gardener…’
Your folder of plant labels looks very impressive as long as it doesn’t turn into a catalogue of plants you ‘used to have’….! After a suggestion from Frances at Island Threads Idid start keeping all my labels last year, but hopefully I am in a position now where if a label is broken or lost I will notice before I have forgotten what it is anyway! I can’t guarantee I shall post one every month, Annette, but this fitted in today, so here is mine: http://ramblinginthegarden.wordpress.com/2014/03/01/only-a-seedy-gardener/
Good point about the labels Cathy. I guess an annual audit would be a good idea. Thanks for joining in my meme too. Yes I don’t know how long I will be able to keep it up, but the older I get the more silly things I do so might be quite a while.
This is a lovely idea for a meme but there is also a Long (or Wide) view hosted by Xericstile on the 1st, which I recommend as it is good to have an overview of the garden. Perhaps you could think of a different date.
Hi Christina,
Sorry I didn’t know that. I chose the first of the month so it was the same date as April Fool’s day. However I am happy for this to be posted any day in the first week instead. That way it needn’t clash with any other meme near or on the first.
You can’t know about all the memes there are. Heather didn’t actually post last month and hasn’t yet today so maybe she has decided to stop doing it. The first week will work, I’ll have to put my thinking cap on.

Great idea for a meme, Annette. I’ ll have to give it a thought so that I can join in next time.
Hi Chloris, thanks that would be great. Thanks so much for visiting and for following my blog.
Annette I have made a blog a year in my garden2013
http://blog.trowelslg.com
Also have a thread on T garden diary to share our plants by date of when we planted etc.
And my clematis haven area got lots of name tags so I remember and take photos when in bloom then tag to.
K
I will have a look – thanks.
Only a gardener gets excited by making compost !!!
Very true! Thanks for joining in.
I do a similar thing with labels or you do sometimes forget the names and they get lost if you put them with the plants .
I only wish I had started earlier as I have quite a few plants without names in the garden. Oh well it will be fun trying to identify them with help from other bloggers.
