Red is a very symbolic colour in Japan and people often deck statues of deities in red hats and/or bibs. Traditionally the colour red was meant to ward off demons and illness, but each deity has its own meaning and traditions.
One of the most extraordinary sights we came across in Japan was on a hill above an old cemetery. We were walking the narrow winding paths when we came across this sight. It was very spooky in the half light and we were not sure of the symbolism. It must have been related to the people buried in the cemetery below, so possibly it was an offering to the gods, hoping for a good after life for a loved one.
